March 20th marks the first day of Spring for the year 2017!

With this exciting news, it’s that time of year again to start getting your home ready for the nice “warmer” weather. Here are a few tips and tricks to help get you started!

1 . Check your Gutters and Downspouts

Whether you cleaned them out before the winter weather hit or not… it’s best to grab that ladder from the garage or your neighbour and inspect the winter damage. There may be fallen debris or maybe even . YIKES…. a spontaneous critter that took refuge in the general area of the gutter or downspout! Needless to say, simply have a safe review to help avoid water build up when rainy weather is upon us.

2. Fix any Cracks

Now by this, I’m talking about the foundation, walkways, patio and so forth where the winter weather may have attacked and provided a beating on the durability in these areas of your property. These have the possibility in welcoming UNWANTED water into your home, so it’s best to seal them up ASAP! Also it’s good to ensure your walkways and patios are sloping away from your home to help ensure water from rainfall travels in the opposite direction … so away from your home, once it falls on the ground.

3. Caulk and Repair Windows

Just like problems with any cracks around the foundation of the home, gaps in the window need caulking to prevent any water from entering you home. Also, once summer weather hits with the intense heat waves it will be paramount to have good sealant around the windows so cold air doesn’t escape your home. This will also help keep the hydro bill controlled and minimized. … Well minimized as far as usage goes …

4. Review the Yard

Prune dead branches, trim back overgrown shrubbery and the list goes on. Basically, start to gradually remove any obstructive items that may be there from snowy months. Spread mulch or bark around trees, shrubs and flowers for a weed-free, well-kept look, while also beginning to plan any space allocation for a garden, children’s play area or that spring project you’ve been pondering as a new year resolution!

5. Don’t Forget Decor Inside

While there is plenty of work to focus on outside of the home, there are also some things that can be done inside the home to brace for the upcoming Spring Air! Peel off the layers of bundled blankets from winter days… though there may not be too much of that as this was quite a mild winter…. but needless to say you understand what I mean! Once that is done, try and incorporate some fun spring colours to brighten the home space. You can also find the trendiest colours to expect through the year 2017 here.
